This CLE will explore how criminal and family law proceedings intersect with immigration law — a dynamic and often misunderstood area known as crimmigration. Non-immigration practitioners frequently represent clients whose immigration status may be jeopardized by a plea agreement, a domestic violence finding, or a change in marital status. Through practical examples, the panel will explain how criminal convictions, family court orders, and divorce proceedings can affect noncitizens’ eligibility for immigration relief or trigger removal. Attendees will learn to identify immigration red flags, understand their ethical duties under Padilla v. Kentucky, and develop strategies for collaborating with immigration counsel to safeguard clients’ rights across multiple legal systems
